CATA Art on Tour: VSA arts Massachusetts

CATA provides visual and performing arts workshops for over 500 people with disabilities in Berkshire County. CATA Art on Tour allows the community to view the results of hundreds of visual arts workshops that take place annually in therapeutic, educational, and cultural settings and in the CATA studio on 70 Railroad Street in Great Barrington.
Exhibit through January 8, 2010. All artwork is for sale and CATA participants receive 50% commission.
VSA arts of Massachusetts promotes inclusion of people with disabilities in our communities and develops effective arts-based teaching strategies that allow students with and without disabilities to learn together.

CATA Art on Tour: Stockbridge Library

Please join us for the opening reception of this special exhibit featuring paintings by eleven women from Riverbrook Residence on Friday, November 13th from 6 to 8pm. CATA and Riverbrook share a 17-year association celebrating the talents and creativity of these artists with disabilities. Exhibit runs through November 30th.

Celebrate Walton Ford’s New Book

Friday, September 25, 7pm
World-renowned local artist Walton Ford will be at The Bookloft on Friday, September 25th, at 7pm, signing copies of the new, affordably-priced edition of Walton Ford: Pancha Tantra. Walton has agreed to do an original illustration in one copy of the book, which will be donated and raffled off by The Bookloft to benefit Community Access to the Arts.
Originally published as an $1,800 limited collectors’ and art edition, Walton Ford: Pancha Tantra is now available as a $70 popular edition featuring a comprehensive exploration of Walton’s signature, highly-detailed watercolors of animals. These beautiful beasts, with murderous intent, are sure to excite the eye. Text by author Bill Buford.

I Am A Part of Art: Annual Art Show and Poetry Reading

Community Access to the Arts provides visual and performing arts workshops for over 500 people with disabilities throughout Berkshire County. Paintings, pastels, monoprints and drawings were selected from artwork created in CATA’s Arts In Arts Out workshops taught by CATA faculty artists Pat Hogan, Leslie Klein, Marlene Marshall, Senta Reis, Janice Shields, and Maria Mazzocco. All artwork is for sale and will be on display through August 31. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm and weekends by appointment.
The twenty-minute long poetry reading starts promptly at 5pm and features works written by CATA participants in a year long class led by Carol Stroll. Guest readers are Joan Burkhard, Diane Prusha, Lee Conlon, Jim Conlon, and Jennie Reins.

CATA at Jacob’s Pillow

Jacob’s Pillow Dance, the celebrated international dance organization and National Historic Landmark nestled in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, presents Dawn Lane & Community Access to the Arts (CATA) as part of its Inside/Out series on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at 6:30pm.
Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival presents both renowned and emerging dance companies and is considered one of the premier arts festivals of the world. The Inside/Out series showcases a different company every day and features a panoramic view of the Berkshire Hills as a backdrop for performances. Inside/Out showings take place at 6:30pm Wednesdays-Saturdays during the Festival and are free and open to the public. This performance series is part of the Pillow’s extensive audience engagement programming, offering more than 200 free performances, events, talks, Archives access, and tours of the 163-acre National Historic Landmark. The 2009 Festival runs June 24 – August 30.

Mission: Imagination – Annual Performance & Gala
The Founders’ Theater, Shakespeare & Company, Lenox
Community Access to the Arts presents “Mission Imagination” at the Founders’ Theatre in Lenox on Saturday, May 2nd at 6pm and Sunday, May 3rd at 1pm. From uproarious improv and cheeky modern dance, to joyful jazz and techno-tap, the show will amaze, inspire and celebrate the creativity of people with disabilities.
The show includes a music video produced by singer, JoAnne Spies featuring residents of six Berkshire Health Systems facilities, Youth Alive, and Berkshire County students, “Perpetual Dialects,” a collaboration between Tap artist, Stefanie Weber, and James Daher using technology to turn a dance floor into a multi-faceted canvas, scenes from Shakespeare’s “A Winter’s Tale” directed by Barby Cardillo and Diane Prusha, and “you who,” a new work by award-winning choreographer, Dawn Lane. Juggler and mime artist, Roger Reed, performs with CATA participant, Pam Tuliebitz, in a duet of improvisational foolery with a cast of props. Singer, Vikki True, collaborates with longtime accompanist, Peter Schneider, and guitarist, Sam Rosen, in a new arrangement of Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley’s ‘Pure Imagination.’”

Sprout Touring Film Festival

In this moving short video, we meet a boy whose little sister has Angelman Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. Through a poem he wrote, we see the strong bond that exists between these siblings.
Bank Robbery in Manhattan 2 min. 30 seconds (Claymation)
A clerk has closed his bank for the night when a robber bursts in and steals all the money. The bankrobber flees with the police in hot pursuit. He crashes his truck into a tree, is captured and thrown into jail. Meanwhile the bank takes the reward!
Body and Soul: Diana & Kathy 40 min.
A rare look at an unusual relationship between two people with disabilities. The film tells the story of Diana Braun who has Down syndrome, and Kathy Conour who is non-verbal and has Cerebral Palsy, and their tireless activism for the rights of people with disabilities. Body and Soul: Diana & Kathy moves beyond disability and activism to a story of a profound, creative friendship.
Father’s Voices 14 min.
Fathers’ Voices focuses on four men raising children with developmental disabilities. In a close up, honest and powerful manner, they share their hopes, dreams, joys and challenges.
Hands Away 3 min.
People often express joy through movements. The clip does not only represent the visualization of the song Hands Away but is at the same time a study of the way young people with various handicaps dance.
Outside/Inside 7 min.
This innovative short film invites us into the world of a young man who has autism and muteness. In his own words, with the creative use of digitation, a communication board and the camera, we are offered an intimate glimpse into the challenges and frustrations of his everyday life.
Svefn-G-Englar 9 min.
This unforgettable and award-winning video, conceived by and supervised by the musical group, Sigur Ros, features the Perlan special-needs theatre group acting out a simple but beautiful play about the elements.
